BACKGROUND

With the rapid development of VR technologies, such as the Oculus Quest, I was inspired to design how Netflix's interface will be enhanced when it's accessed through VR devices. After looking at customers' feedback and comparing it to the competitors, I found several features that Netflix lacks. For example, a playback speed button, video quality control button, identify button, rating button, new user tour, and watch party.

GOALS

To keep up with the latest VR technologies, Netflix Immerse is designed to create an immersive, interactive watching experience that enhances user engagement and satisfaction. Additionally, by adding several new features to the product, the redesign seeks to keep Netflix's position as a leader in the subscription-based streaming service.

CHALLENGES & SOLUTIONS

Design

Delivering a user-friendly watch party room interface that doesn't overwhelm users was challenging. There are a lot of buttons displayed, such as camera, microphone, and chats, altogether with the interface of the video player page itself.

Therefore, I evaluated competitors' designs and gathered references online for the watch party feature. The watch party room's video calls and chats are located as an adjustable/resizable sidebar. This way, users can interact with the other party members while still focusing on the Movie/TV Show they're watching.

WORK PROCESS

Design

1. SWOT analysis on Netflix's branding and website

After analyzing Netflix's website, I found opportunities for new features to be added and existing features to be improved.

2. Revamping Netflix's name and logo

After rounds of brainstorming, I settled on the name Netflix Immerse. This name is inspired by the capabilities of VR technology that allow users to be fully immersed and experience their favourite movie/TV show.

3. Creating low-fidelity wireframes and user flows

With pencil and paper, all ideas from the SWOT analysis are poured into low-fidelity user flows and wireframes. Multiple rounds of adjustments to refine the experiences were done at this stage through focus groups with my lecturer and classmates.

4. Creating mid-fidelity wireframes and user flows

The low-fidelity sketches are digitized to fixate the concept and ease the process of high-fidelity designs.

5. Designing high-fidelity UI

With Adobe Illustrator, I took the existing Netflix website's interface and added/improved some features based on the mid-fidelity wireframe. All while still maintaining the same interface as the current Netflix site.

6. Filming a paper prototype

After all designs were finalized, a paper prototype was filmed to showcase how to operate the revamped features of Netflix Immerse with high-fidelity designs.
